10 Things You Can Do to Jump-start your Career Before New Year’s Eve!
We’re halfway through the fourth quarter of the year. Did you make a resolution to work on your career this year, but haven’t found the time to do it? It’s not too late – here are 10 simple things that you can do to jump-start your career before the New Year!
- Set up 2 breakfast meetings before the end of December, with people with whom you want to deepen a relationship.
- Organize your network list – take some time to create an up-to-date list of Advocates, Allies, and Acquaintances…then you’ll know who you really want to meet with before the end of the year. And you’ll be ready for a strategic approach to building relationships in 2019 (see tip #8 for a great free resource.)
- Don’t avoid holiday parties. We’re entering the time of year when there are more parties than usual. Practice your positioning statement in advance and go to the events ready to describe your value with energy, in a way that ‘grabs people’s ears.’.
- Practice a few conversation openers so that you’re more comfortable and effective at events where you’re meeting people you don’t know. These can be as simple as “Are you doing anything special over the holidays?” or “How are you connected to this organization (or to the hosts)?” “Is there anybody here I should meet?”
- Send Thanksgiving cards (or emails) to 12 people with whom you want to stay connected. Thank them for a specific contribution they’ve made in your life or career.
- Volunteer for an organization that needs extra help over the holidays. You’ll feel good, and you’ll meet new people.
- Host a gathering – small or large – of people you think ought to know each other. All you need to do is introduce them to each other, and you’ll have a successful event!
- Go to our website, TactfulSelfPromotion.com and download the free resources, “A Networking Plan for a Year,” and/or “A Fast Start Networking Guide.” In just a few minutes, you’ll have a clear plan to follow.
- Buy a copy of our book, “Power Your Career: The Art of Tactful Self-Promotion at Work.” And since it’s the giving season, buy copies as gifts (you’ll be helping others, and reduce your stress by stocking up on some gifts early). You can order through our website or on Amazon in hardcover or as an ebook.
- Enjoy the holidays – it’s a time for giving to others. Show up. Listen. Offer assistance. What better way to strengthen your relationships!
Happy Network Building!!
