Bloom where you’re planted!
6 tips to make the best of your current situation
Do you sometimes feel like you’re planted in the wrong place? Did you ever take a job you didn’t love? Ever had a bad boss? Are you in a rut at your current job? These are laments we hear all too often. I recently ran into a friend who’s unhappily in his 4th job in 18 months, and is still complaining about all of them. It made me think, what would be helpful advice to give him to make this job more enjoyable – or at least useful.
Here are some tips for that job you are stuck in a bad job situation:
Stop complaining!
Nobody likes to listen to a complainer. Even your best friends don’t want to hear about your job woes. And every time you hear yourself talking negatively, you reinforce how unhappy you are. Can you replace your negative talk with hope and positive plans? A positive attitude can go a long way to changing the way you approach the job.
Be worthy (the first chapter in our book)
Even if this isn’t your dream job, give it your best. Never let your best be second rate; you never know where your skills or accomplishments will take you. You’re always building your reputation — good references from this job won’t hurt!
Build your network
There are probably people in this organization (or customers or vendors) who can be of help to you. Find a few. Building your network may help you move up, making positive connections with people may benefit you for years to come. It may open new doors to ideas that you hadn’t thought about.
Use your time to prepare for the future
What are some of the good skills and knowledge that you can take away from your current job? Use your spare time to develop a new skill or start a new hobby that may lead to your next opportunity. Keep researching, staying ahead of your field. Keep your mind growing.
Think ahead
If you are thinking of a change, be sure you’re going to something instead of running away from something. As the saying goes, the grass isn’t always greener. Don’t move too fast. You make think change right away is best but, take a step back, assess and then make a decision. Know where you are going and why. Get help from a career coach.
Don’t wait until things are perfect to start working on your career. You may not put down deep roots in your current job, but you can start planting seeds for future growth, and keep on blooming wherever you are!
